Programmatic agencies.

Programmatic advertising is the automated, auction-based buying of digital media through demand-side platforms (DSPs) like DV360, The Trade Desk, and Amazon DSP. It spans display, online video, connected TV, digital out-of-home, and digital audio. Unlike PPC (search ads) or paid social (Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn), programmatic runs across the open web and broadcast-equivalent inventory.

Editor's note
Only eleven UK agencies in the index lead with programmatic, and that number reflects how the discipline actually sits in the market. The big trading volumes live inside holding-group network agencies (GroupM, Publicis, Omnicom, Dentsu, Havas, IPG) and a small set of independent trading desks. Below the network tier, most generalist digital agencies treat programmatic as a sub-line of paid media, executed via DV360 or The Trade Desk rather than as a headline service. When a media plan is genuinely programmatic-led, the credible shortlist is short. Pricing in 2026 has two visible layers and one that often isn't. The visible layers are agency management fee (retainer, percentage of spend, or hybrid) and DSP access fee, typically 10-20% of media passed through or bundled. The invisible layer is the wider supply chain: SSP take, data licensing, verification, curation, and reseller hops. ISBA's Programmatic Supply Chain Transparency work and the 2024 ANA benchmark both found that less than half of every pound entering a DSP reaches a working publisher. The practical lesson is to demand log-level data and a separated fee schedule, not an all-in CPM. The same procurement conversation now also covers cookieless planning, supply path optimisation, Made-for-Advertising exclusion, and emissions-aware buying via Scope3.
Typical cost
10-20% of spend
+ DSP fees, on £25k-500k+ monthly media

Specialist / boutique trading desk £2,000-6,000 mgmt fee + 10-20% DSP · Mid-market £4,000-15,000 + DSP fees · Network / holding-group £15,000-100,000+ on enterprise spend. Most credible agencies will not take programmatic-only briefs below ~£10k/mo media because DSP access fees stop making sense.

Realistic timeline
4-8 weeks
onboarding, then always-on

1-2wks DSP seat + billing + pixel and conversion setup · 1-2wks audience build, first-party data onboarding, creative trafficking (VAST for CTV) · 2-4wks CTV QA, brand-safety and SPO config, test campaigns. CTV and clean-room data flows push the upper bound.

Red flags
6 to watch
in any pitch
  • · Bundled 'all-in CPM' with no separated agency fee, DSP fee, data fee, and SSP cost breakdown
  • · No supply path optimisation (SPO) strategy and no explicit Made-for-Advertising (MFA) exclusion list
  • · No third-party verification via DoubleVerify, IAS, or MOAT (or sell-side-only reporting)
  • · Refuses log-level data access or independent audit rights in the contract
  • · Won't disclose rebates, principal-trading arrangements, or preferred-supplier incentives
  • · Treats programmatic as 'retargeting + display network' rather than a CTV / DOOH / audio / open-web stack

Curated by humans

UK programmatic engagements in 2026 layer two costs. Agency management runs £2,000-6,000 a month for specialist trading desks, £4,000-15,000 at mid-market, and £15,000-100,000+ at network or holding-group level. On top sits the DSP access fee, typically 10-20% of media spend on The Trade Desk and 10-15% on DV360. Most credible agencies set a minimum media commitment around £10,000 a month because below that, platform fees swallow efficiency.
