IT & Technology agencies.

Technology marketing is the discipline of selling software, IT services, infrastructure, and developer tools to business buyers who research independently, evaluate in committees, and buy over months. It is distinct because the audience is technical, the sales cycle is long, and the channel mix is tilted toward LinkedIn, marketplaces, and AI answer engines.

Editor's note
AgencyIndex lists 343 UK agencies positioning into IT and technology. They split roughly three ways: generalist demand-gen and growth shops that take tech clients alongside other B2B sectors, B2B-only specialists built around SaaS, cybersecurity, fintech and devtools, and a small set of boutiques focused on developer marketing, dev-rel content, and category creation. Most are concentrated in London, Manchester, Bristol and Edinburgh, mirroring the wider UK tech footprint that techUK and Tech Nation track. The sector is distinctive for three reasons. Sales cycles are long, with UK B2B buyers spending the majority of the journey in anonymous research before any vendor contact. Audiences are technical, which means generic case studies and surface-level explainers fail trust tests inside buying committees. And the channel mix is narrow but deep: LinkedIn for paid and organic, intent platforms like 6sense and Demandbase for ABM, G2 and Capterra for shortlist visibility, and increasingly AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews) for top-of-funnel discovery. What is shifting in 2026 is the shape of demand itself. Pure inbound SEO is being squeezed by AI Overviews answering the question before the click. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) and AEO have become named workstreams on retainer scopes. Product-led growth has pulled marketing closer to the in-product experience, and developer marketing has matured into a discipline with its own playbook of tutorials, open-source content, and technical documentation as acquisition channels.

Regulatory landscape
UK GDPR · PECR · ICO
data and electronic-marketing rules gate every outbound campaign

The ICO enforces UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), and the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 raised the maximum PECR fine from £500,000 to £17.5 million or 4% of global turnover. PECR treats corporate subscribers (limited companies, LLPs, Scottish partnerships) differently from individual subscribers: unsolicited B2B email and SMS to corporate bodies does not require prior consent, but sole traders and most partnerships are classed as individuals and need consent or a valid soft opt-in. UK GDPR still applies to any named individual at a business, which covers most of the contact data tech marketers actually use. The Advertising Standards Authority polices claim accuracy in ads and on websites, and the CMA covers unfair or misleading trading practices.

Specialist signals
5 signals
of real B2B technology experience
  • · Named case studies with UK or international software, SaaS, cybersecurity or devtools brands, ideally across Series A through enterprise stages
  • · Working knowledge of ABM platforms (6sense, Demandbase, RollWorks) and intent data, not just LinkedIn audience targeting
  • · Marketplace and review-site strategy for G2, Capterra, Gartner Peer Insights and TrustRadius, with case studies showing category movement
  • · Demonstrable developer-marketing capability where relevant: technical writers with engineering backgrounds, dev-rel content, open-source contribution as a channel
  • · Measurement framework that connects multi-touch attribution to pipeline and closed revenue in a CRM, not MQL and pageview reports
Sector watch-outs
5 to watch
in any technology pitch
  • · Agencies that pitch B2B SaaS using B2C ecom tactics: heavy reliance on Meta retargeting, conversion-rate playbooks built for impulse purchase, no LinkedIn or marketplace strategy
  • · No grasp of buying-committee dynamics or long sales cycles, with proposals that promise leads in weeks and ignore the 6-12 month UK B2B norm
  • · Lead-gen pricing based on cost per MQL with no link to opportunity stage, pipeline value or CRM-tracked revenue
  • · No named technical writers or SMEs for developer audiences, with content samples that read like generic SaaS explainers rather than tutorials engineers would trust
  • · Vague AI search story: no view on GEO, AEO or how to earn citations inside ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews, which is where shortlist research increasingly starts

Curated by humans

UK retainers cluster in three bands. Boutique B2B shops and freelancers run £3,000-7,000 a month for a focused brief like LinkedIn paid plus content, or a single ABM motion against 50-100 accounts. Mid-market B2B specialists sit at £8,000-25,000 a month for integrated demand gen covering paid, organic, ABM, marketplace listings and reporting. Network and full-service agencies bill £25,000-60,000 a month for multi-market programmes with brand work, category creation and in-product experimentation. ABM platform licensing (6sense, Demandbase) typically sits outside agency fees and adds £40,000-120,000 a year. Project work like a positioning sprint or website rebuild is usually scoped separately at £15,000-100,000.
