Independent agencies.

Independent agencies are privately owned UK marketing firms that sit outside the holding-group networks and PE-backed roll-ups, with founders or partners holding the equity and the senior bench. Decisions go through the room rather than a global P&L, and the people who pitch the work tend to be the people who run it.

Editor's note
AgencyIndex lists 744 UK agencies in the independent model, around 91% of the 818 in the directory. It is the default UK shape and splits into four bands: solo-founder consultancies and freelance-led shops under five people, the 5-50 FTE owner-managed core that makes up the bulk of the market, mid-market indies at 50-200 FTE with established service lines and named clients, and the big indie shops at 200-500+ staff (Wieden+Kennedy London, Mother, Uncommon Creative Studio, and a handful of others that operate at network scale while staying privately held). What makes the model distinct is the absence of holding-group machinery. There is no parent P&L, no quarterly reporting to a listed group, no procurement-driven approval chain on creative work, and no sister-agency conflict-of-interest layer to manage. Founders and senior partners are typically in the room on the pitch and stay in the room on the work, decision speed is measured in days rather than weeks, and rate cards are usually 20-50% below an equivalent-scope network. The trade-offs sit on the other side of the same coin: smaller benches mean key-person risk when a senior leaves, multi-market or multi-stream briefs can stretch resourcing, specialist craft that the holding groups keep in-house often gets sub-contracted, and procurement panels at FTSE-100 and public-sector buyers frequently gate independents out. The model is also restructuring. PE money is rolling up the mid-market faster than at any point in the last decade: Brave Bison has bought Builtvisible, The Fifth, MiniMBA, MTM, and Engage Digital Partners in 2025 alone, Croud took ECI Partners backing in 2024 and has been acquiring in the UK and US, Whalar picked up Sixteenth on the influencer side, and a long tail of smaller indie holding companies (Ayima Network, Stagwell-backed shops, Acceleration) are buying named specialists. AI tooling is letting smaller indies field capability that previously needed a network bench. And the founder-led generation that built the 5-50 FTE core in the 2010s is now hitting exit-strategy age, which is one of the drivers feeding the consolidation pipeline.

When to choose
5 signals
this model fits the brief
  • · Single-market UK brief, or a focused brief in one or two adjacent markets
  • · Decision speed and senior availability matter more than multi-market reach
  • · Direct founder or partner involvement on the account is non-negotiable
  • · Annual brief value under £250,000 in total fees, or a retainer under £15,000 a month
  • · Specialist craft brief where the named senior practitioner is the reason to hire
Pricing reality
£500-15,000
per month, retainer

Solo-founder consultancies and freelance-led shops typically charge £500-3,000 a month for SEO, paid media, content, or social retainers, often quoted as a single-channel scope. Owner-managed indies at 5-50 FTE run £3,000-10,000 a month for multi-channel retainers, with project work on positioning, identity, or a campaign scoped at £15,000-75,000. Mid-market indies and the big indie shops sit at £10,000-30,000+ a month, where the rate card starts to converge with the lower end of network pricing. Day rates run £400-800 at the boutique end, £800-1,500 for senior practitioners at mid-market indies, and £1,500-2,500 at the named indie shops. Average UK indie retainers are roughly 30% higher than 2023 levels, driven by the skills shortage and AI tooling investment.

Model watch-outs
5 to watch
in any indie pitch
  • · Key-person risk: the senior who wins the pitch is also the senior who would run the account, and there is no bench depth if they leave or are double-booked
  • · Bench depth on multi-stream briefs: a shop of 20 cannot credibly resource a brief that needs creative, media, PR, and production running in parallel without sub-contracting half of it
  • · Sub-contract chain on specialist craft: production, motion, dev, or media-buying routed to another freelance or shop, with the markup and the named team not always declared on the proposal
  • · Multi-market reach: indies outside the top tier rarely have working partnerships in every market, and a Europe-wide or global brief usually exposes gaps in coverage
  • · Procurement and compliance gating: smaller indies often cannot satisfy ISO 27001, GDPR data-processing schedules, or the master services agreement templates that FTSE-100 and public-sector buyers require by default
Frequently asked

What brands ask about independent agencies.

5 questions our editors get most often, answered honestly. No agency-marketing speak.

Curated by humans

An independent agency is a privately owned UK marketing firm that sits outside the holding-group networks (WPP, Publicis, Omnicom, Dentsu, Havas) and the PE-backed roll-ups (Brave Bison, Croud, Stagwell, VCCP). Equity is held by the founders or partners rather than a listed parent, the senior bench is in-house rather than borrowed from a sister agency, and there is no group P&L to report into. Independents make up around 91% of the 818 UK agencies on AgencyIndex (744 listings) and an even higher share of the wider UK market by agency count, although the networks take a disproportionate share of revenue from FTSE-100 and global brand spend. Sizes range from solo-founder consultancies to the big indie shops at 200-500+ staff such as Wieden+Kennedy London, Mother, and Uncommon Creative Studio.
