Creative agencies.

Creative is the campaign-led discipline of generating and executing brand ideas across paid channels: TV, video, OOH, radio, print, social film, and the rollout toolkit that ties them together. It is distinct from branding, which builds the identity system upstream, and from content marketing, which runs always-on content and distribution downstream of the campaign idea.

Editor's note
Creative is one of the broadest categories in the UK index, with 203 agencies listing it as a core service. The word covers very different jobs. A boutique independent doing a single campaign concept lands at £15,000. A Mother London or adam&eveDDB platform idea running across TV, OOH, social, and CRM sits at £600,000-plus. Same label, very different commercial conversation. The useful frame is that a creative agency produces the idea and executions that bring a brand to market in campaign form. Branding builds the identity system upstream. Creative agencies make the campaign that goes live on paid channels. Content marketing runs the always-on layer downstream of launch. Credible UK shops are honest about where their work sits in that chain. In 2026 the discipline has shifted. Generative AI has industrialised production, so moodboards, variants, scripts, and adaptation packs are faster and cheaper. The premium has moved upstream to insight and the platform idea, and downstream to performance creative built on live data. The creative-media split is dissolving. Campaign, Marketing Week, and The Drum have been consistent on all three points.
Typical cost
£15,000-1,000,000+

Realistic timeline
8-16 weeks

1wk brief and alignment · 1-2wk strategy and insight · 2-3wk concept routes and selection · 1-2wk script and design development · 1-2wk pre-production · 1-2wk production · 1-2wk post and adaptation · 1wk trafficking and launch. Complex multi-market or talent-led work 12-20wk+. Always-on social and digital creative runs 1-4wk per asset burst once templates exist.

Red flags
6 to watch
in any pitch
  • · Senior creatives front-load the pitch but the day-to-day team is unnamed or clearly more junior - classic bait-and-switch
  • · Pitch leads with portfolio rather than insight: case studies are slick but unconnected to the brand category, audience, or commercial objective
  • · Strategy is platitudes ('own the culture', 'build brand love') with no proposition, audience truth, or role for comms
  • · Production sub-contracting undisclosed: who shoots, edits, scores, or animates is not in the proposal
  • · No measurement framework tied to business outcomes - awards and reach in the deck, no plan for awareness, consideration, or sales lift
  • · AI-assisted production passed off as bespoke, or AI usage policy missing where it should be explicit
Frequently asked

Curated by humans

Creative is priced per campaign more often than per month. Boutique and independent shops run £15,000-180,000 per campaign depending on scope, with retainers of £5,000-40,000 a month for fractional 'creative on tap' arrangements. Mid-market integrated agencies sit at £40,000-500,000 per campaign or £15,000-100,000 a month retained. Network and holding-group agencies bill £100,000-1,000,000-plus for major brand platform work. Usage rights, talent buyouts, and production sit outside the creative fee.
